The car ride home sucked. It was the worst silence I’ve ever sat through. She tried to pretend she was napping. She knew I wouldn’t bother her or try to hold a conversation. She said she didn’t want music either. That was how I knew, without a doubt, she was angry.
When we got home, she wanted to take Diesel out. I handed her the leash without any argument. While she was gone, I went through the day in my mind. I knew it wasn’t jealousy. That is not her style. Then it dawned on me.
Fuck.
I’m an idiot.
I’d go out in search of her, but I know better. She’s using this time to process and for me to pull my perceived bruised ego out of my ass. I wasn’t trying to be crass. That’s the way I always was in that situation. She doesn’t know that. However, telling her will also lead to that’s the kind of smartass I was in the casting room with Jordan. Old habits die hard. This one might just have me over the balcony.
Was it even that or something else altogether?
I turn on a bit of Jason Mraz in the background. I wanted her to come home to a happier vibe. It was that or Matt Nathanson. I opted for the one she wouldn’t assume would lead somewhere she wasn’t ready to go.
I am in the kitchen pouring two glasses of red when she opens the door and the thundering herd leads the charge. Diesel rounds the corner on a dime and slides into me.
“Whoa. Take it easy, buddy. Did you have a good walk with Mom?”
“He ran playing fetch while I sat on the bench.”
“Are you feeling all right?”
“Yes and no.”
She sets his leash on the counter and heads to the living room. This is going to get us nowhere. One of us is going to have to break. I’m going to bite the bullet on this one.
“Lex, I wasn’t trying to be an asshole if that’s what’s upsetting you. I was giving you the same shit I’ve given any director or assistant in the casting room.”
“You salute them too? Maybe Jordan liked your attitude, but I didn’t, and no, that wasn’t all of it.”
“Honestly? He fucking hated it. Lex, I’m sorry. It wasn’t meant to be disrespectful. I’m sorry you saw it that way.”
“I might be oversensitive, but it struck me that on our first day in our new roles and this happens. Should we even be doing this? Can I do this?”
“You’re second-guessing yourself because I made a joke that flopped? Are you kidding?”
“No, it’s not just that, but I’m not kidding. You need to be showing me as much respect, if not more, than anyone else. They will follow your lead. You are the example. Your position is higher. You’re a stakeholder, Julian. You can’t just toe the line like everyone else. If you do simply that, the whole show will be over before it even starts.”
She wasn’t there. She didn’t know. What she just said was nearly a carbon copy of what my father said to me.
